At long last, the president made his position clear today: he will support an amendment to the constitution declaring marriage to be exclusively a union between a man and a woman. This is a historic moment for this country, and Bush has clearly drawn a line. It’s going to get really ugly from now on, and I can’t say how things will turn out…but this is it: the issue is now front and center.
For interesting commentary on this subject, read through Andrew Sullivan’s blog. Sullivan is a conservative writer, but he’s also gay, and his recent Time Magazine editorial is as clear and straightforward an argument for gay marriage as you’ll read anywhere.
Hopefully this will be one of many issues that swings moderate voters away from the Conservative Christian Republican party.

I haven’t heard – how are those same sex couples who have been married (San Fran, or up here in Canada, etc.) being handled down there? I imagine it’d be difficult to retract something once it’s been obtained…
It’s a no brainer to me; I’m surprised it took so long for OUR government to get around to it…
My hope is that in the not too distant future, we will look at this debate and say, with a look of disbelief reserved for discussions of slavery, suffrage, or racial segregation: “omfg, they used to specify the sex and precise ratio of people in a marriage? that’s like when women couldn’t vote and georgia outlawed the term ‘evolution’ in textbooks”.
Gavin Newsom is a great man.
Actually Georgia voted to keep “evolution.” Bill Mahr has a funny joke about how “mathematics” is also still called “ciphering.”
Good to know that.
How about that deal in Kansas a couple of years ago when they tried to ban not only the word but also the concept of evolution from textbooks? Did that materialize?
That was reversed in 2001.
Yeah, but they continue to do the same thing in other states… they came in tried to do it here in Ohio in 2002 and tried again this year.
What scares about this line being drawn by Bush is that I really am scared about how many people are on the anti-gay-marraige side. Many people who would otherwise vote against Bush cuz they realize he’s a filthy scum liar could be scared into doing so by the spectre of an issue they have strong opinions on.
