Well that didn’t take long…just one day after the rumor that Natalie Portman would be starring in an adaptation of V for Vendetta, Warner Bros. formally announced the project and her participation. While I am still dying to know who’s going to wind up in the title role, I must say, the teaser poster released today (at right) is actually quite encouraging. For one thing, the mask in the picture (which is a photo of a sculpture/mask, not a painting) is perfect. It really looks like a theatrical prop, not the super-slick ridiculousness you’d see in a superhero movie. I’m quite relieved by this…part of me was afraid the mask would look like the Green Goblin in Spider-Man.
Beyond that however, I find the tag line pretty cool as well: “Remember, remember the 5th of November.” That’s probably the film’s release date (11/05/05), but it’s also Guy Fawkes Day, and a line from the poem written about that day:
Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot.
Perfect. Hopefully the movie lives up to this initial early promise.
I’ve actually JUST started this book. It’s really quite good so far, reminds me a lot of 1984. This guy, however, seems like he might win ;).
I look forward cautiously. I’m not entirely convinced that the Wachoskis aren’t going kooky, after what they did with the series that was basically going to be their mark on cinema until they messed it up. Very much like how I don’t care to trust Joel Schumaker to present me with a well-known Broadway play that’s been performed to the T, thanks to inexcusable duds like Batman Begins. They can still redeem themselves, but they’re certainly on the watch list.
OT: Break out the kleenex, the DirecTV/Tivo deal is dead.

I wasn’t crazy about the original Matrix to begin with, so I can’t say I was hugely disappointed in the sequels. If anything, i thought the second one was better than the first.
But it’s not those movies that makes me think they’ll be able to adapt this material, it’s Bound, which showed they have a firm grasp of visual storytelling without spectacle.
They’re not actually directing this one, but they did write the screenplay…I believe they even did it before the Matrix.
