Man, here’s some deeply sad news…as reported by Janice “GirlBomb” Erlbaum, Mark “JUDGECAL” Chamberlain has died.
I’m in shock. As I’m sure anyone who knew him even casually will tell you, Cal was one of the nicest and most fun people I’ve ever met. He was a geek with the soul of a punk rocker. A Billy Idol look-a-like who loved Judge Dredd. He was truly one of a kind.
He was also one of my early gateways into the gaming industry. My career can be directly traced back through those days at QuakeCast (and Shooters, our post-Quake QuakeCast).
Janice (who is a professional writer these days, with multiple books under her belt) wrote far more eloquently than I can on the subject. I heartily recommend reading her eulogy.
Rock on, JUDGECAL. You will be missed.

Been trying to post this at Blues News, but it’s not working ATM, so I’ll post here. (This is a followup to a post to Blue’s News included at the end):
Word. I remember all that. To add a few: I remember Blue’s Quake Rag. I remember Beyond Castle Wolfenstein. I remember Wolfenstein 3D. I remember Doom in the dead of night on a smokin’ 486 with headphones. I remember how GLQuake gave Zanshin wood. I remember 3dfx Voodoo. I remember Paul Steed and Brian Hook. I remember driving up to the Borg cube in Mesquite to meet Paul Steed with a CD to sign (Donna Jackson’s business card is still in my wallet.) I remember joking in the elevator that id’s office number was probably 666 and being blown away when it was. I remember coming home late from work because we were all playing Quake deathmatch. I remember Ion Storm and how I wasn’t going to be made Romero’s bitch after all. I remember the building in downtown Dallas with the hole in it and wondering how that would help make good games. I remember Killcreek and thinking the same. I remember Dank and Skud. I remember teh King of teh Monstars. I remember not being so fscking old. Good times.
Bye, JUDGECAL.

Pouring one out for a fallen brother.

I am one of his uncles, I remember the little blonde kid that I and my younger brother grew up with, we lost contact with him in the 80’s,
occasionally hearing news or seeing him in magazine articles. it is sad to hear of his passing at such a young age, I am sure my sister is feeling some pain to hear of this.
Judge had found his cyber home on a message board I frequented.. Spent some time talking to him online about the 80’s in NYC and the wild times back then.. He will be missed he was really a great person.
RIP Judge.
